The UN International Maritime Organization has warned that introducing fees for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz could set a dangerous precedent. The agency emphasized that freedom of navigation should not be restricted, Reuters reports, writes UNN.

Earlier, Iranian officials voiced the idea of introducing fees for using the strait after agreements on a temporary ceasefire between the US and Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the key routes for global energy supplies.
The UN recalled that the Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) guarantees the right of transit passage through international straits.
States bordering straits shall not impede this right or suspend transit passage
