Trump wants to involve US manufacturers in arms production, like in World War II

The administration of US President Donald Trump wants US car and other manufacturers to play a greater role in arms production. This resembles the practice used during World War II. This is reported by UNN with reference to The Wall Street Journal.

Details

According to people familiar with the discussions, senior defense officials have held talks on the production of weapons and other military materials with the heads of several companies, including Mary Barra of General Motors and Jim Farley of Ford Motor.

Among the companies that participated in negotiations with representatives of the Ministry of Defense were GE Aerospace and the vehicle and equipment manufacturer Oshkosh. It is also reported that the negotiations began even before the war in Iran.

The negotiations were preliminary and covered a wide range of issues. Representatives of the Ministry of Defense noted that American manufacturers may be needed to support traditional defense companies, and asked whether these companies would be able to quickly reorient themselves to work in the defense sector.

The Pentagon is interested in engaging these companies to use their personnel and production capacity to increase the production of ammunition and other equipment, as the wars in Ukraine and Iran deplete stockpiles
