Local media reported that dozens of people may have been injured.
The mayor's office acknowledged the incident, but did not say how many people were injured.
Local TV channels showed emergency workers working at the scene, including medics preparing stretchers nearby. Two large excavators were also parked in front of the station building to clear the rubble.
"This is an extremely difficult rescue operation that will last for several hours. We have about 80 rescuers from several cities and heavy equipment," Dacic said, adding that two more people are trapped under the rubble but are alive.
News channel N1 reported that trains were suspended from the station, located 70 kilometers (43 miles) northwest of the capital Belgrade.
