The Hungarian government is sending citizens a list of reasons not to support Ukraine's accession to the EU ahead of the national survey

The Hungarian government has added an information sheet to the ballot for polling its citizens on Ukraine's membership in the EU, listing the "risks" of Ukraine joining the EU. This is reported by UNN with reference to DW and X-account of the Hungarian Government Spokesperson Zoltan Kovacs.

Details

It is noted that together with the ballots for the national survey, the Hungarian authorities will send their citizens a list of "counterarguments" against Ukraine's accession to the European Union. This was written on his page in the social network X on Saturday, March 29, by the spokesman of the Hungarian government, Zoltan Kovacs.

"Soon Hungarians will receive their voting packages on Ukraine's EU membership. They contain a brief overview of 7 key risks of accession - issues that directly affect Hungary's future and must be carefully considered before making a decision," Kovacs said in a post.

The list of these short points, which are presented almost without explanation, refers to financial and agricultural risk. They say that if Ukraine joins the EU, it would direct funds to it, and this would involve Budapest in debt, as Brussels wants general borrowing. It is also claimed that Hungarian farmers will allegedly lose subsidies due to the redirection of European funds

- DW reports.

The next counterargument - on "food security" - is formulated as follows: "Genetically modified crops and banned chemicals are used in Ukraine, which threatens the quality of food products."

There is also a "security risk" in the list. However, this point does not mention the Russian Federation's war against Ukraine, but states that allegedly "before the war, Ukraine was a center of organized crime," and "weapons may fall into the wrong hands."

Another of the points sounds like this: "Cheap Ukrainian labor may reduce wages, jeopardize jobs and pensions."

The list also contains a pseudo-argument that "Ukraine lacks mandatory vaccination, which threatens public health in the context of open borders." This point is particularly egregious - in fact, Ukraine requires mandatory vaccination of children before kindergarten and school, and there is a national vaccination calendar

- DW writes.

The last point scares with the fact that "Ukraine's hasty accession" to the EU allegedly threatens the payment of the so-called 13th pension.

Reminder

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that Ukraine's accession to the EU requires unanimous support, and the last word remains with Hungary. He does not consider it fair to compare Ukraine with other candidate countries.
