Tajikistan proposes to criminalize non-payment and theft of electricity

The President of Tajikistan has proposed introducing criminal liability for non-payment and theft of electricity. He is concerned about the large losses of electricity in winter.
President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon "expressed concern" about the irrational use of electricity and its large losses in the autumn-winter period. Therefore, he instructed responsible persons to eliminate these shortcomings in the energy sector and proposed to introduce criminal liability for non-payment of electricity and its theft.
Emomali Rahmon reported this at a meeting of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, writes UNN.
Today, during a government meeting, the Minister of Economic Development and Trade of Tajikistan, Zavki Zavkizodu, reported on the timely preparation of the economic and social spheres of the republic for the autumn-winter season of 2025-2026.
The head of state instructed to approve a plan of measures to implement this goal and create a republican headquarters from among the first heads of ministries and departments that would regulate these measures. He also expressed concern about the irrational use of electricity and its losses above the norm in the autumn-winter season of 2024-2025 and instructed to eliminate these shortcomings in the future.
Rahmon stressed that it is even worth establishing criminal liability for the illegal use of electricity and non-payment for it.
