Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense stated that late Monday evening, 21 Chinese aircraft were detected, including J-16 fighter jets and drones. They were operating alongside PRC warships near the island. In response, the Taiwanese military scrambled aircraft and dispatched ships to monitor the situation.
Joseph Wu, Secretary-General of Taiwan's National Security Council, stated that Beijing's actions were "completely unprovoked."
The PRC is the sole source of instability in the Indo-Pacific region
Taiwan's Ministry of Defense also released photographs of Chinese fighter jets, a Y-20 aerial refueling tanker, and the warship "Yinchuan," taken during the monitoring mission.
Taipei reported that the "combat patrol" has already concluded; however, Taiwan continues to monitor the movements of the Chinese aircraft carrier "Liaoning" in the Western Pacific.
In recent years, China has increased military pressure on Taiwan, sending its ships and aircraft to the area around the island almost daily. Last week, the PRC also conducted a similar "readiness patrol" following the anniversary of Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te's inauguration. Beijing labels him a "separatist" and rejects proposals for negotiations.
