Switzerland expands sanctions against Russia: Includes ban on diamonds

Switzerland has adopted further measures of the 14th EU sanctions package against Russia. The amendments include clarification of the ban on Russian diamonds and extension of the deadlines for issuing permits for the withdrawal of investments from Russia.

"On August 21, the Federal Council approved further measures of the 14th EU sanctions package against Russia. They include a clarification of the ban on Russian diamonds, making them internationally harmonized. Effective implementation of sanctions against Russia and international coordination are of great importance to the Federal Council. The Federal Council also extended the deadlines for issuing permits for divestment from Russia. The aim is to ensure that Swiss companies can legally cease their operations in Russia. The changes will take effect on August 27," the statement said.

The 14th package of sanctions adopted by the EU on June 24 includes a number of additional measures that are currently being studied in detail. The EAER Chairman informed the Federal Council about the measures at its meeting on August 21. The Federal Council will discuss these measures in the near future.
