Schoolboy in Berlin finds Greek coin over 2000 years old

In the Spandau district of Berlin, a 13-year-old schoolboy found an ancient bronze coin in a field and, according to experts, made a unique discovery for the city. It is a coin from the 3rd century BC, which became the first Greek find of its kind in the history of Berlin. This was reported by Bild, writes UNN.

Details

The coin belongs to the Hellenistic period and was minted in Ilion — ancient Troy in the northwest of modern Turkey — between 281 and 261 BC. One side depicts the goddess Athena in a Corinthian helmet, the other shows her with a headdress, spear, and spindle. The find weighs seven grams and has a diameter of 12 millimeters.

How the coin ended up in the north of Central Europe, scientists cannot yet precisely explain. It is known that the find site was once a burial ground from the Bronze or early Iron Age. Ceramic fragments, cremation remains, a bronze button, Roman-era objects, and a Slavic scabbard detail were also found there.

Experts believe that due to its small material value, the coin likely had symbolic significance.
