SBI detains Navy ship commander who extorted bribe from subordinates for land leave

The commander of the Ukrainian Navy was detained for receiving bribes of up to UAH 150,000 per month from his subordinates for granting them shore leave.

Law enforcement officers have exposed the commander of a department on one of the Ukrainian Navy vessels, who would not let his subordinates go ashore without a bribe. This was reported by the State Bureau of Investigation, UNN reports.

Investigators found that in order to take a legal day off from the ship, his subordinates had to pay him UAH 10 thousand. According to intelligence, he could have earned at least UAH 150 thousand per month on sailors' time off.

On July 9, 2024, law enforcement officers detained the defendant while receiving another payment in the amount of USD 1 thousand. He received this money from a subordinate for the opportunity to go to the land during the weekend for a month. The serviceman was served a notice of suspicion of receiving an unlawful benefit by an official (Part 3 of Art. 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
