It is noted that the rate of Russia's advance has been decreasing month by month since November 2024, when its troops captured more than 700 km² of Ukrainian territory.
Most of the Russian forces' advances in March 2025 took place in the central part of the Donetsk region, but Russia did not improve its operational position. Ukrainian forces also carried out tactical counterattacks, which partially reversed Russia's gains around Pokrovsk
It is also noted that the level of Russian ground attacks in several directions decreased during most of March 2025.
"Attacks began to increase closer to the end of the month, but this did not lead to a higher rate of advance," British intelligence officers summarized.
