Context
The President of Moldova signed the country's application to join the European Union in March 2022. A few months later, Chisinau received the status of an EU candidate. On December 14, 2023, following following a two-day summit, the European Council decided to start negotiations with Moldova on accession to the European Union.
Earlier, Moldovan President Maia Sandu instructed the the parliament to organize a referendum on the country's accession to the EU and announced that she would run in the 2024 presidential election.
