Peter Higgs, the Nobel Prize-winning physicist who predicted the Higgs boson, dies at the age of 95 after a short illness.

Nobel Prize winner in physics Peter Higgs died at the age of 95, UNN reports with reference to the press service of the University of Edinburgh.

It is known that Professor Higgs died on April 8 at home after a short illness.

"Professor Higgs is best known for predicting the existence of the fundamental physical particle that was named after him, the Higgs boson," the university said.

The scientist's idea was confirmed by experiments almost 50 years later, in 2012, at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland.

The discovery followed the awarding of the Nobel Prize to Professor Higgs in 2013.
