Kyiv • UNN
BALTOPS exercises are starting in the Baltic Sea with the participation of 15 countries and 20 ships. The maneuvers will last until June 20 to demonstrate the unity of the Alliance.

The US and NATO allies will begin the annual BALTOPS naval exercises in the Baltic Sea this week. Despite a smaller scale compared to last year, the maneuvers are intended to demonstrate the unity and readiness of the Alliance amid rising tensions in the region. This was reported by Reuters, according to UNN.

The exercises will run from June 4 to June 20 and will bring together about 20 ships from 15 countries and approximately 6,000 military personnel. This is nearly half the size of last year. According to NATO representatives, the reduction is not due to a decrease in Alliance support, but because part of the naval forces is involved in other operations, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz and the Arctic.
The United States will provide the flagship Mount Whitney for the exercises. BALTOPS will remain the largest naval maneuvers in the Baltic Sea this year, despite discussions regarding the future role of the US in NATO.
German Rear Admiral Stephan Haisch emphasized that the exercises are not a direct response to current events; however, conducting them under present conditions strengthens the political signal. According to him, the maneuvers are meant to demonstrate the cohesion of the allies and their readiness to ensure security in the region.
