Money in the account is not yet a guarantee: how to obtain a tourist visa to Britain
Kyiv • UNN
The UK immigration service assesses not only the availability of funds, but also their source and whether they are consistent with the financial circumstances of the trip. The absence of formal employment is not an automatic reason for refusal, but it is important to provide documentary proof of income.

Applying for a tourist visa to the United Kingdom in 2026 is increasingly moving to a digital format, in particular through the use of eVisa. At the same time, the requirements for applicants themselves have not become simpler: when reviewing an application, the UK immigration authorities assess not only whether funds are available, but also their origin, the regularity of income, and whether the financial situation corresponds to the planned trip. Valeriia Nahorna, a visa lawyer at LLC "Law Company "LOGIC", told UNN about this.
According to her, one of the key mistakes applicants make is trying to demonstrate only a certain balance in a bank account without explaining the origin of the funds.
The British side pays very close attention to the origin of funds. It is important for the officer to see not simply a certain amount in the account before the documents are submitted, but to understand where this money came from. That is, we look at regular incoming payments, account turnover, sources of income, and how much this entire financial picture corresponds to the information provided by the applicant in the form
eVisa: digitalisation does not mean simplified requirements
In 2026, the United Kingdom continues to transfer its immigration system to a digital format. eVisa is an electronic record in the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) system that confirms a person's immigration status and is linked to their UKVI Account.
For applicants, this means a gradual move away from physical documents as the primary means of confirming status. At the same time, the transition to eVisa does not automatically mean that the procedure for obtaining a tourist visa has been simplified.
When applying for a Standard Visitor visa, applicants must still convincingly confirm the purpose of their trip, their financial capability, and their intention to stay temporarily in the United Kingdom.
Is formal employment required?
The absence of conventional formal employment in itself does not mean an automatic refusal of a tourist visa. A person may be self-employed, engage in business activities, receive income from providing services, or have several sources of income.
At the same time, in such a case it is important to explain with documents what the person does and where they receive their money from.
The absence of conventional formal employment in itself does not mean that a person cannot apply for a British tourist visa. But in that case, it is especially important to properly explain to the officer what the applicant does, where they receive their funds from, and how their income is generated. If a person actually has a regular income, but this is not reflected in the documents at all, the officer cannot simply guess what their real financial situation is
Thus, what matters is not so much the employee's formal status as a clear financial history that can be confirmed by documents.
Is having enough money for the trip alone sufficient?
Another common mistake is to calculate the required amount solely based on the cost of tickets, accommodation, and other expenses during the trip.
According to the lawyer, the British side assesses the financial situation more broadly: the applicant's income, savings, regular expenses, and financial obligations are taken into account.
We always recommend assessing finances more broadly than simply the cost of tickets and a hotel. After the trip, the person must return home and continue to support their life. If the documents show that, for the sake of a one-week tourist trip, the applicant is spending practically all of their available funds, a logical question arises as to how much such a trip corresponds to their actual financial situation
In other words, a large amount in an account in itself does not guarantee a positive decision. It is important that the travel expenses appear realistic in comparison with the person's financial means.
Why is topping up an account before applying risky?
Particular attention should be paid to large or unusual incoming payments made immediately before the documents are submitted.
The mere fact of receiving a substantial amount is not automatically a problem. It could be, for example, the sale of property, a contractual payment, dividends, a transfer between the person's own accounts, or the repayment of a debt.
However, the source of such an incoming payment must be clear and, where necessary, supported by documents.
If a person has had low account turnover for an extended period, and immediately before applying for a visa an amount suddenly appears in their account that is several times higher than their usual income, this may raise additional questions.
The application form and bank statement must tell the same story
Another important point is that the information in the application form must correspond to the financial documents.
If an applicant states one level of income, while the movement of funds in their accounts shows an entirely different picture, the visa officer may have questions.
One of the biggest mistakes is preparing each document separately. The application form is completed one way, the bank statement is simply attached, and information about employment is provided separately — and no one checks whether it all forms one logical picture. With a UK visa, it is important to look at the case through the officer’s eyes: is it clear to them who this person is, what they do, where they get their money from, why they are travelling to the United Kingdom specifically now, and why this trip is financially realistic for them
According to her, all the documents must form a consistent and clear story about the applicant.
Can you travel at a sponsor’s expense?
A tourist trip may be funded by another person — for example, a husband or wife, parents, or another sponsor.
However, in that case it is also necessary to explain exactly who is funding the trip, what relationship exists between the applicant and the sponsor, what the sponsor’s financial capacity is, and precisely which expenses they are covering.
Sponsorship does not eliminate the need to explain the applicant’s overall circumstances.
What is most important for a tourist visa
Thus, in 2026, the digitalization of the UK immigration system primarily simplifies the technical side of the process, but does not abolish the requirements for tourists.
For a positive assessment of a visa case, it is important not simply to show a certain amount in the account. The applicant must demonstrate a clear source of income, logical movement of funds, expenses that correspond to their financial means, and consistency across all the information in the application form and documents.
