"Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Ruben Amorim as head coach of the first men's team, subject to a work visa," the statement reads.
It is noted that Amorim will join the team until June 2027 with a club option for another year after he fulfills his obligations to his current club. He will join Manchester United on Monday, November 11.
"Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly regarded young coaches in European football. Rood van Nistelrooy will continue to lead the team until Ruben joins," the statement said.
This comes after Portuguese club Sporting confirmed that United had contacted them about their manager, Sky News reports.
Sky Sports News reported that Amorim, 39, was the only coach the club spoke to during the recruitment process.
It is assumed that United paid Sporting an additional €1 million over and above the €10 million severance payment for early release after the 30-day notice period expired.
