Mali is massively rearming with Chinese armored vehicles, MLRS, and air defense despite the presence of Russian forces

Mali, where the so-called "African Corps," formed on the basis of Russian forces, is operating, is actively rearming with Chinese military equipment. Despite the presence of Russian military personnel, the country is relying on a rapid and relatively inexpensive modernization of its weaponry through China to counter rebels and ISIS militants. This was reported by Defense Express analysts, writes UNN.

Details

In December 2025, footage emerged of Chinese VN22 armored personnel carriers being supplied to Mali with STANAG Level 4 protection, capable of withstanding heavy machine gun fire and mine explosions. Dongfeng Mengshi armored vehicles and VN2C MRAPs with a 6×6 wheel formula were also spotted, increasing troop mobility and protection.

In early 2026, Mali received additional supplies, including SR-5 multiple rocket launchers – analogues of American HIMARS. These systems are capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 70 km, but the exact characteristics depend on the type of missiles transferred.

New air defense systems

In April 2026, information emerged about Mali receiving Yitian short-range anti-aircraft missile systems based on TY-90 missiles.

They are designed to hit drones, helicopters, and aircraft at a distance of up to 8 km. Despite the fact that the rebels currently do not have aviation, such systems can become an element of long-term strengthening of the country's defense.

Chinese footprint in rearmament

The arms supplies are likely carried out by the Chinese defense corporation Norinco. Experts suggest that payment may be made through loans, barter schemes, or other agreements with the PRC.

Against the backdrop of the presence of Russian units in Mali, Chinese weapons are becoming the basis of a new stage of the country's rearmament.
