It is noted that some members of the "Coalition of the Willing" insist that the European leader take on the obligation to negotiate with Russia as part of efforts to support Ukraine.
The Telegraph writes that Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer have been identified as the most likely interlocutors with Moscow. However, the British Prime Minister is not planning to hold talks with Putin as part of the UK's efforts to support Ukraine's defence.
At the same time, a source in the Elysee Palace said that Macron is ready to take this position "when the time comes".
From the very beginning of the full-scale invasion, Macron has positioned himself as a mediator between Europe and Putin. He left diplomatic channels with Moscow open longer than any of Kyiv's staunchest supporters in Europe, despite harsh criticism of his actions
However, Macron ended all direct contact with the Kremlin when it became clear to him that Putin had no intention of stopping the invasion. But when asked whether the time had come to resume contact with the head of the Russian Federation, a representative of the Elysee Palace replied: "Apparently, not yet."
According to The Telegraph, a month earlier, after a meeting of the European Council, Macron said he was ready to talk to Putin "when we, together with President Zelenskyy and our European partners, believe that the time is right."
