Just a few days ago, a Papillon named Lazare touched the hearts of millions of animal lovers: he was considered the oldest dog in the world. Now, the shaggy toy spaniel has passed away: he died at the age of 30 years and five months in a veterinary clinic in the French town of Allonzier-la-Caille, UNN reports, citing Bild.

Only a few weeks ago, Lazare found a new home following the death of his long-time owner. 29-year-old Ophélie Boudol took the elderly dog from a shelter near Annecy — despite the fact that the little Papillon was even older than she was.

However, their shared happiness lasted only a few weeks. When Lazare suddenly became lethargic and indifferent, Ophélie took him to a veterinary clinic. There, his condition deteriorated sharply.

"Last night, he fell asleep peacefully in my arms," the young Frenchwoman told the AFP agency.

According to BFM TV, she later emphasized that Lazare did not suffer before his death.

Despite his advanced age, his owner described Lazare as a very affectionate and curious dog. The little Papillon was almost blind and deaf, had no teeth left, and wore diapers. Ophélie Boudol lovingly called him "our little baby grandpa."

There is no doubt that Lazare truly lived to be 30 years old, representatives of the animal welfare organization SPA stated. His date of birth — December 4, 1995 — was confirmed via a microchip and the French pedigree register.
