Japan's Meteorological Agency has warned of an increased likelihood of a major earthquake in the Nankai Fault. In the event of a mega-earthquake, aftershocks can be felt over a large area, and a tsunami can reach 30 meters.
Japan has issued a warning about the increased likelihood of a powerful earthquake in the Nankai fault, which runs under the Pacific Ocean from the Japanese prefecture of Shizuoka to the islands of Shikoku and Kyushu. This was reported by the National Meteorological Office of Japan, UNN writes.
The probability of a powerful earthquake in the Nankai fault is relatively higher than usual
According to experts, in the event of a mega-earthquake, tremors could be felt in the area from Kyushu Island to the Kanto region of Honshu Island, and a tsunami could hit areas from the Kanto region to the southern islands of Okinawa.
Add
In recent years, Japanese seismologists have been greatly concerned about the possibility of an imminent earthquake in the Nankai Fault, located southeast of the coast of the central part of the main Japanese island of Honshu.
Powerful earthquakes with a magnitude of about 8 occur here about once every 100-200 years. According to scientists, the probability of an earthquake of magnitude 8 or 9 within the next 30 years is 70-80%. In this case, a large part of the country will be affected, and a tsunami of more than 30 meters in height may hit its Pacific coast. The last mega-earthquake on this fault occurred in 1946.
Recall
On August 8, the Japanese island of Kyushu experienced an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1. The center was located at a depth of 30 kilometers in the ocean, and the disaster brought high waves to the coast.
