From Tuesday, July 1, a new standard for gasoline E10 came into effect at all gas stations in Ukraine, which provides for the addition of more than 7% bioethanol to the fuel composition, as part of the adaptation of the Ukrainian fuel market to European norms, writes UNN.

In 2024, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the law "On Amendments to Certain Laws of Ukraine Regarding the Mandatory Use of Liquid Biofuels (Biocomponents) in the Transport Sector," according to which, from May 1, 2025, all automotive gasolines sold at Ukrainian gas stations, except for gasolines with an octane number of 98 and higher, were to contain at least 5% biocomponents, i.e., bioethanol.

This law amended another law — "On Alternative Fuels" — according to which, from today, July 1, all automotive gasolines, except for gasolines with an octane number of 98 and higher supplied for the needs of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and the State Reserve, must contain more than 7% bioethanol.

In accordance with the requirements of the Technical Regulation, such fuel will be labeled as E10, which corresponds to European practice.

President of the Oil and Gas Association of Ukraine Yaroslav Starovoytenko noted that extending the postponement of the mandatory biocomponent content in automotive gasolines from July 1, 2026, is not being considered. Participants in the fuel market are ready to work in accordance with the new legal requirements.

Extending the postponement of the mandatory biocomponent content in automotive gasolines is currently not being considered. Companies — members of the Oil and Gas Association of Ukraine — are preparing to implement the law's requirements from July 1 and are implementing all necessary organizational and logistical processes to operate under the new rules

- said Starovoytenko.

According to him, the new requirements apply exclusively to automotive gasolines. At the same time, the norm does not apply to diesel fuel, gasolines with an octane number of 98 and higher, as well as fuel supplied for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the state reserve, and the creation of minimum stocks of oil and petroleum products.

The introduction of the bioethanol content norm is a positive step for the Ukrainian market. In fact, we are approaching standards that have long been in effect in the countries of the European Union. Fuel suppliers also reacted positively to these changes, as they gain the opportunity to offer the Ukrainian market the same product that is supplied to the domestic markets of EU countries

- noted Starovoytenko.

The Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine emphasized that the introduction of mandatory addition of bioethanol to gasoline from July 1, 2026, will not affect the cost of fuel at Ukrainian gas stations and will not create a threat to food security.

According to Deputy Minister of Economy Taras Vysotskyi, after the transition to E5 and E10 standards, which provide for the mandatory addition of 5% bioethanol to gasoline, no significant impact on prices is expected.

Already today, some networks are selling gasoline with bioethanol without a price increase, and in some places even cheaper than regular gasoline

- he noted.

Vysotskyi also noted that bioethanol production will not create a critical burden on the agricultural sector, and Ukraine has sufficient resource potential to meet both food needs and the production of fuel components.
