The Australian government has appointed a woman as the head of the army for the first time in the country's 125-year history. This was reported by Reuters, according to UNN.

Details

Lieutenant General Susan Coyle, who currently serves as the head of joint capabilities, will become the new chief of the land forces. She will assume her new position in July, replacing Lieutenant General Simon Stuart.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called it a historic event for the country.

From July, we will have a woman as the head of the army for the first time in the 125-year history of the Australian Army

– he stated.

Defense Minister Richard Marles also emphasized the importance of the decision.

This is truly a historic moment. As Susan said, you can't be what you can't see

– he noted.

According to government officials, Coyle's appointment is of great significance for women who are already serving in the Australian Armed Forces or are only considering such a career.

55-year-old Coyle joined the military in 1987 and has held a number of leadership positions during her service. She will be the first woman to lead any individual branch of service within the Australian defense forces.

Currently, women make up about 21% of the Australian defense force personnel and 18.5% of leadership positions. By 2030, the country plans to increase this figure to 25%.
