A North Korean soldier captured by Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region of Russia died a day after being taken prisoner. According to South Korean intelligence, the death occurred as a result of an exacerbation of his injuries.

A wounded North Korean soldier captured by the Ukrainian military in the Kursk region of Russia died of wound aggravation, Yonhap  reports, citing South Korea's intelligence agency, UNN reports.

A wounded DPRK soldier died on Friday from a deteriorating condition, a day after being taken prisoner .

“We have confirmed through a friendly country's intelligence organization that the North Korean soldier captured alive on December 26 died some time ago as his wounds deteriorated,” South Korea's National Intelligence Service (NIS) said.

The statement came hours after the agency initially confirmed that  wounded North Korean soldier was in captivity after reporting the first case of a North Korean soldier captured by Ukrainian special operations forces

The military publication Militarny reported on Thursday that Ukrainian troops had captured a soldier during an operation in the Kursk region of western Russia, without specifying when the incident occurred.

A photo of an allegedly captured North Korean soldier, who appears to have been injured, was shared on Telegram.

Currently, about 11,000 North Korean troops have been deployed to Russiaand, according to South Korean officials, there are signs of preparations for further deployment of troops and military equipment.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said earlier this week that North Korea suffered more than 3,000 casualties in the Kursk region.
