Dozens of US tanks arrive in Taiwan to defend against a possible attack from China

The first 38 U.S. M1A2 Abrams tanks have arrived in Taiwan to strengthen its defense against a possible Chinese attack. This is part of an order for 108 tanks, the rest will be delivered in 2025-2026.

The M1A2 Abrams tanks arrived in Taiwan on Sunday and were delivered to the army training base in Xinzhu, south of Taipei.

Taiwan is bolstering its military capabilities against a possible Chinese attack: it has received 38 M1A2 Abrams main battle tanks from the United States. The tanks  arrived in Taiwan on Sunday; they were transported to an army training base in Xinzhu, south of Taipei.

These are the first of 108 tanks ordered by Taiwan in 2019. The rest of the M1A2 tanks are expected to be delivered in 2025 and 2026, an army official told the French news agency AFP.

Until now, Taiwan had about 1,000 Taiwanese-made CM 11 Brave Tiger tanks, as well as American-made M60A3 tanks, but both models are now considered obsolete.

The island nation currently relies heavily on arms sales from the United States to strengthen its security.

Meanwhile, China, which considers Taiwan part of its territory, is not happy about this. The PRC views the island as a renegade province that should eventually become part of the country again.
