According to reports, the move is part of a response to US President Donald Trump's introduction of double-digit tariffs on Chinese goods in honor of "Liberation Day".
The new tariff corresponds to the US "appropriate" tariff rate of 34% on Chinese exports.
The Ministry of Commerce in Beijing also said in its statement that it will strengthen export controls on rare earth metals used in high-tech products such as computer chips and batteries for electric vehicles.
The Chinese government also said it would add 27 American companies to lists of companies subject to trade sanctions or export controls. It also announced that it had filed a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization on the issue of tariffs.
