Attorney Serhiy Karpenko is demanding 4.4 billion UAH in moral damages (nearly $100 million) from Ihor Kolomoisky for the attempt on his life. He filed the corresponding lawsuit today with the Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kyiv, which is presiding over the criminal proceedings regarding the organization of the contract killing of the lawyer in 2003.

According to the investigation, the motive for the attempt on Karpenko's life was the lawyer's refusal to amend documents regarding the shareholders' meeting of the Zaporizhzhia plant "Dniprospetsstal" in Kolomoisky's interests. In August 2003, four perpetrators attacked the lawyer in Feodosia. They struck him on the head with a metal rod and inflicted numerous stab wounds to his chest, abdomen, and back. Doctors managed to save his life.

The four perpetrators of the crime were sentenced to prison terms ranging from six to twelve years. In 2005, the case against the alleged mastermind was separated into a separate proceeding. That same year, the Prosecutor General's Office initiated a criminal case against Kolomoisky on suspicion of organizing the attempted murder.

For decades, the case saw no progress, but in May 2024, law enforcement authorities notified Kolomoisky of a suspicion regarding the organization of a contract killing. They emphasized that they had established indisputable evidence confirming the identity of the mastermind.

As previously reported, Kolomoisky has been in custody since September 2023. Initially, he was served with a notice of suspicion under articles concerning fraud and the legalization of property obtained by criminal means. Subsequently, he was notified of two more suspicions related to the embezzlement of a total of 15 billion UAH from PrivatBank. In 2025, the High Court of England ordered the former owners of the now state-owned PrivatBank, Ihor Kolomoisky and Hennadiy Boholiubov, to pay the bank over $3 billion in compensation and legal costs.
