Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud was born on August 31, 1985, in Jeddah. He is the son of King Salman and his third wife, Fahda bint Falah Al Hithlain. He earned a bachelor's degree in law from King Saud University. He began his political career in 2009 as his father's personal adviser. In 2015, when Salman ascended to the throne, the 29-year-old prince became minister of defense—the youngest in the world at the time. He is the ideologue behind Vision 2030, a program to diversify Saudi Arabia's economy in order to reduce its dependence on oil.
Declassified U.S. CIA reports state that the prince ordered the 2018 murder of opposition journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
