The European Union (EU) is a political and economic union created after World War II to ensure peace and economic cooperation on the European continent. It evolved from the European Economic Community, founded in 1957, and was officially established as the European Union in 1993 with the entry into force of the Maastricht Treaty, guided by the values of democracy, freedom, equality, and the rule of law.
