According to Governor Brian Kemp, rains over the weekend partially helped contain the fire but did not solve the problem.
"A little rain will help us, but it's not going to get us out of this situation. We're going to be in this for a while,"
Fires are partially contained, but the situation remains difficult
The largest fire in Brantley County, which covered about 90 square kilometers and destroyed more than 80 homes, is currently 32% contained, a significant increase compared to 6% the day before. According to Georgia Forestry Commission Director Johnny Sabo, the precipitation allowed for the expansion of containment lines and the extinguishing of some hotspots.
Another major fire on the Georgia-Florida border has already scorched more than 130 square kilometers and is approximately 23% contained. The fire destroyed residential and outbuildings; however, no casualties or injuries have been reported in Georgia.
Experts note that the increase in the number of fires in the region is linked to drought, strong winds, climate change, and a large amount of dry vegetation.
