In the southeast of the state of Georgia, forest fires continue to threaten settlements, having already destroyed more than 120 homes. This is reported by Associated Press, writes UNN.

Details

According to local authorities, the two largest fires remain largely uncontrolled – each contained only about 10%.

The largest fire in Brantley County, ongoing since the beginning of the week, has already destroyed at least 87 homes and covered more than 14.8 square miles. Authorities call it the largest in the state's history.

Another fire in southern Georgia, near the border with Florida, has destroyed at least 35 homes and spread over an area of more than 46 square miles.

Threat of spread

Local authorities warn of the risk of further fire spread due to strong winds.

This fire will spread quickly as soon as the winds pick up

– said a county representative.

Residents are urged to evacuate immediately if corresponding orders are issued.

Situation in the region

In total, more than 150 fires are recorded in Georgia and Florida, causing smoke and deterioration of air quality.

According to experts, the fire spread is facilitated by drought, strong winds, and the aftermath of previous natural disasters.
