It is noted that Chong died “due to old age and serious illness”.
This comes a day after the Vietnamese government unexpectedly said that Chong needed time to “focus on active treatment” of an unspecified illness
After his death, President To Lam will assume responsibility for managing the party's central committee, politburo, and secretariat.

On January 19, 2011, Nguyen Phu Trong was elected General Secretary of the CPV Central Committee at the 11th Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam. At the 12th Congress of the CPV on January 27, 2016, he was re-elected General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam. In January 2021, he was re-elected for a third term.
