Prime Minister of Ireland Micheál Martin stated that Ukraine can join the EU even during the war with Russia. He emphasized the support for sanctions and the priority of membership for Ukraine.

The Prime Minister of Ireland, who today takes over the presidency of the EU Council, Micheál Martin, suggested that Ukraine could join the EU even during the war with Russia, as he stated on the RTÉ program "Ranking Ireland", reports UNN.

When Martin was asked about Ukraine, he said that the negotiation chapters for Ukraine's accession to the EU had been opened. He said that the prospect of EU membership is a priority for them.
He said that "Ukraine's EU membership can still happen while the country is at war".
Martin said that the negotiations will be conducted on merit, and that the talks will progress, but added: "We want the war to end".
"The number of people dying there is quite shocking and horrifying," he added.
He said that Ireland strongly supports all sanctions packages against Russia.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to be present in Dublin today as part of the ceremony marking the start of Ireland's presidency of the EU Council.
