The trillion-ton iceberg A23a, which broke off from Antarctica in 1986, has resumed its movement in the Southern Ocean. Scientists are tracking its path and studying the impact on marine ecosystems.

The A23a iceberg is so huge that the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) calls it a “mega-berg”: it weighs more than a trillion tons. This is reported by  Forbes, peshy UNN.

The iceberg first broke off from the Filchner Ice Shelf in Antarctica in 1986, but then got stuck in the Weddell Sea for three decades.

After being stuck for a long time, a giant iceberg is now drifting in the Southern Ocean. Scientists and satellites are tracking the iceberg's movements to see how it might affect the ecosystems it interacts with.

A video has been released showing views of the iceberg from ocean level and from satellites in space, where you can see A23a pirouetting and then finally drifting.

The iceberg first broke away from the Filchner Ice Shelf in Antarctica in 1986, but then got stuck in the Weddell Sea for three decades. In 2020, it started moving north, but its journey stopped.

- said BAS oceanographer Andrew Meyers.

“For several months, the iceberg was locked in a Taylor column, an oceanographic phenomenon where water rotating over an underwater mountain holds objects in place. This dynamic caused A23a to rotate in one place, delaying its expected rapid drift northward,” BAS said.

A23a was last observed in late 2023, when satellites detected the iceberg attempting to leave Antarctica. This iceberg can change the areas through which it moves.

We do know that these giant icebergs can provide nutrients to the waters they pass through, creating thriving ecosystems in other, less productive areas. We don't know what impact specific icebergs, their size and origin might have on this process,

said biogeochemist Laura Taylor, who was part of an expedition that visited A23a in person a year ago.

Researchers took water samples in front of, behind, and next to the iceberg to study its impact on the ecosystem. Now it is free to float.

Scientists expect the iceberg to head toward South Georgia Island, where warmer water is likely to cause the large iceberg to break up into smaller pieces.
