"It was instinctive. No one taught me how to do it," she said of songwriting in a raspy voice, which she attributed to singing along to the evening's performances and Wednesday night's historic NBA game between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs.
She told the audience about how her family changed their lives by moving from Pennsylvania to Nashville, Tennessee, when she was still a teenager.
"I can never express my gratitude," the singer-songwriter said, fighting back tears, as she paid tribute to their sacrifices for her career.
She gave young songwriters a piece of advice: "You really have to prioritize what you love, down to your very core. Because you're going to need it."
Steven Spielberg introduced Swift with a surprise speech about the power of songwriting. "There is something undeniable about the way songs leave a mark on our souls," he said, before turning his attention to Swift. "Somehow, Taylor knows us all very well."
Swift began her speech by acknowledging Spielberg's contributions. "Because of examples like Steven's, I trusted my imagination," she said.
