Suspected Estlink-2 cable damage, Eagle S tanker moved for detailed investigation

The Finnish authorities have moved the Russian tanker Eagle S for a detailed investigation into the damage to the submarine cable. The vessel is suspected of damaging the Estlink-2 electric cable and four telecommunications cables.

Eagle S is suspected of damaging the Estlink 2 power cable between Finland and Estonia on Christmas Day. In addition to the power cable, four telecommunication cables running through the Gulf of Finland were damaged. The Helsinki Police Department reported that the vessel, which was boarded on Thursday, was moved to an inland anchorage near the port of Porvoo, east of the capital, as a more suitable location for the investigation.

The Eagle S is flying the flag of the Cook Islands, but the EU and Finland in particular call it part of Russia's shadowy fleet of tankers that transport oil and gas in violation of international sanctions imposed because of Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine.

Three additional communication cables between Finland and Estonia are found to be damaged, in addition to the previously damaged Estlink 2 . The Finnish company Fingrid is considering the possibility of sabotage, and the police are checking the surrounding ships.
Russia has practiced a scenario of an attack on Finland and the Baltic states using various types of troops. According to NATO, the attack could include sea, land and air strikes via Murmansk.
