Sudden flood hits northern Vietnam, casualties and missing reported

At least four people have died, and four others are missing after a flash flood hit the mountain village of Muong Than in Lai Chau province in northern Vietnam. Reuters reports, writes UNN.

According to state media, the flood occurred early Friday morning after several days of heavy rains that affected the northern regions of the country. In addition to the dead and missing, seven other people were injured.
Photos published by the Vietnam News Agency show significant destruction: the village was covered by flows of mud and floodwater, and roads were blocked by rocks and fallen trees.
Heavy rains damaged homes, roads, and crops
According to the government's disaster response agency, since Wednesday, flash floods and landslides caused by heavy rains have damaged roads, power grids, and hundreds of homes. About 238 hectares of agricultural land were also flooded.
Meteorologists warn that the bad weather will continue. Forecasts indicate that up to 250 mm of rain may fall in some areas of northern Vietnam on Saturday, increasing the risk of new flash floods and landslides.
Vietnam regularly suffers from destructive floods and storms during the rainy season, which lasts from July to September. According to the country's government, in 2025, natural disasters, mainly floods, claimed the lives of 489 people.
