Spanish footballers Ruiz and Gavi were gifted over 150 kg of tomatoes for winning the World Cup

The authorities of the Spanish municipality of Los Palacios y Villafranca gave the midfielders of the Spanish national team Fabián Ruiz and Gavi, where the footballers are from, 150 kilograms of tomatoes for winning the 2026 World Cup, reports UNN.

As stated in the press service of the municipality, an extraordinary atmosphere reigned in the "Plaza de Andalucía" square. Thousands of people, many of whom came from different parts of the province and even from Andalusia, sought to take part in a meeting full of emotions. 

Jerseys of the Spanish national team, Spanish flags, and the joy of being able to see the world champions filled the square and its surroundings. Before the arrival of the new world champions, the audience gave a warm ovation to Jesús Navas - the first footballer from Palacios who, in 2010, lifted the World Cup trophy as part of the Spanish national team. His presence symbolized the beginning of a story that, sixteen years later, continues to be written in golden letters thanks to two new outstanding residents of the city 

It is reported that Ruiz and Gavi signed the Book of Honor, "recording on paper their pride in returning to their hometown as world champions and thanking for the warmth they felt throughout the championship." 

It is worth noting that Los Palacios y Villafranca is considered one of the main centers for growing tomatoes in Spain, so this vegetable has long become a symbol of the city. Therefore, the footballers received tomatoes as a gift from the Tomato Producers Association. 

Ruiz received 85 kilograms of tomatoes of the "Bombón Colorado" variety, and Gavi - 68.5 kilograms. That is exactly how much each of the footballers weighs. 

In addition, the authorities announced their intention to name football fields after Ruiz, Gavi, and Navas, and are also initiating the installation of a monument to the footballers. 

Also yesterday, July 21, King Felipe VI of Spain, together with his family, received the Spanish national team at his residence. 

The King and Queen, the Princess of Asturias, and Infanta Sofía received the players and coaching staff of the Spanish men's national football team for an audience at the Zarzuela Palace after the team won the 2026 FIFA World Cup and became world champions 

Also, a video went viral showing Spanish national team winger Lamine Yamal violating royal protocol during the meeting, greeting the king in a "brotherly" manner. 

During the official ceremony, the footballers approached the members of the royal family one by one. Most of them limited themselves to a traditional handshake and brief greetings. After Yamal shook hands with King Felipe VI, the 19-year-old forward unexpectedly hugged the monarch. This moment was captured on video and attracted significant attention from fans on social media.

Despite the formality of royal protocol, Yamal's gesture was perceived as an expression of sincere joy after the greatest success of his career.
