The military government said on Saturday that 1,002 people have already been found dead, another 2,376 injured, and 30 people are missing.
The earthquake occurred at noon local time on Friday and was followed by several aftershocks, one of which had a magnitude of 6.4.
In Thailand, the earthquake struck the Greater Bangkok area, killing six people, injuring 26, and 47 are still missing.
Several countries, including Malaysia, Russia and China, have sent rescue workers and aid teams.
