Flu is already circulating in the west of Ukraine: Kiev expects an outbreak in January

In the west of Ukraine, the circulation of influenza was recorded, which in January-February will spread to the center of the country. Most deaths are related to COVID-19, and all those who died were not vaccinated or did not complete the vaccination course.
In Ukraine, there is a circulation of influenza, in particular in the West. It is expected that in January-February it will extend to the central regions. Hospitalizations remain low, but most deaths are caused by covid, especially among the unvaccinated. This was announced by Deputy Minister of Health, Chief Sanitary doctor Igor Kuzin in an interview, reports UNN.
"Now we are already seeing the circulation of the flu virus in three regions of the country. As always, the situation begins in western Ukraine, and then, in January-February, the flu will gradually spread to the central part. There is already circulation in the western part of Ukraine, but not yet in Kiev," Kuzin said.
He noted that despite the fact that more than a million Ukrainians have been ill, hospitalization rates remain at a rather low level. This is typical for the season of acute respiratory viral infections. At the same time, a significant part of deaths is associated with covid. As of today, 51 covid-related deaths have been recorded since the beginning of the epidemic season.
"100% of these people were either not vaccinated, or they received only one vaccination and did not complete the course of vaccination, which was necessary for medical reasons," Kuzin added.
Is there currently a covid vaccine?
As of today, Ukraine uses the only vaccine available throughout the territory — a vaccine specific to the Omicron strain. Many countries have already abandoned alternative producers.
"It protects against a universal set of strains of the Omicron sub-variant, which allows it to be used in a wide range. As the circulation of Omicron strains, in particular the Flirt sub-variant, continues, this vaccine remains effective against all Omicron — specific strains, "Kuzin said.
Given that all mutations currently occur around this sub-variant, the vaccine remains relevant. Vaccines are available in sufficient quantities both at the national and regional levels.
"Vaccination remains free, and I want to note that next year it will also be free," the deputy minister of Health added.
