The heat in Romania could destroy up to 90% of the sunflower and corn crop. In Moldova, the losses of these crops due to drought reach 70-100%. The governments of both countries plan to compensate farmers.

Romania is suffering from the effects of the heat wave: high temperatures have burned fields. Farmers do not rule out the loss of about 90% of the crop. Also in Moldova, corn and sunflower plantations were affected by the drought. We are talking about losses of more than 70%. Written by UNN with reference to Euronews and Agerpres.

The July heatwave, when temperatures reached 40 Celsius, probably destroyed most of Romania's crops.  Not least, there may be problems for farmers growing sunflower and corn.

If in a good year, let's say, we used to get about 2500-3000 kg per hectare, then this year we hope to reach 1000 kg. Although, judging by what we see here, we will definitely not achieve this

- Dumitru Bita, a farmer from the village of Castranova, told Euronews.

At the same time, the National Meteorological Office of Romania warns that the drought will continue.

This is a disaster. There has been no rain... I don't even know if I will be able to cover the costs

- says farmer Julian Groza from the village of Leu in Dolzha.

In July, Romanian Agriculture Minister Florin Barbu announced that farmers would receive compensation of 200 to 250 euros per hectare of damaged crops.

The Romanian national news agency Agerpres reported that the total amount of funds expected to be spent on drought compensation is between 500 and 600 million euros.

Corn plantations in the south of the Republic of Moldova have been affected by drought by 70-100%, and sunflower plantations by 60-80%. This was stated by Agriculture Minister Vladimir Bolea, who asked farmers in arid areas to make better choices about the crops they plant. A group of experts should prepare recommendations for low-risk crops and varieties within the next two weeks, "which will allow the sector to withstand climate change, which is getting worse every year," the minister added.
