Canada has imposed sanctions against 30 russians who participated in "elections" in the russian-occupied territories of Ukraine aimed at supporting illegal annexations.

Canada imposes new sanctions on 30 russian citizens. This was announced by Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly, UNN reports .

Details

The sanctions are imposed on individuals who ran as candidates in the so-called "elections" organized by russia in September 2023 in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. It is specified that these individuals ran for various positions in the temporarily occupied parts of the Kherson region, including the state duma.

By running for these "official" government positions in the russian-occupied territories of Ukraine, these people sought to legitimize russia's illegal, full-scale invasion of Ukraine, allowing the imposition of russian laws, media, education and currency to "russify" Ukrainians who remain in the occupied territories

Melanie Joly said.

It is not yet clear who exactly was sanctioned. The statement also says that Canada will continue to work with its international partners to help Ukraine defend itself from russia's illegal and unjustified encroachment and protect its citizens from Russia's repressive regime.
