Pope Francis said in his autobiography that British intelligence prevented an assassination attempt by Islamists during the pontiff's visit to Iraq in 2021.

Here is what Francis says :

Shortly after landing in Baghdad in March 2021, it was reported that a suicide bombing attack was being prepared for an event with the participation of the pontiff in the city of Mosul.

But this plan was uncovered by British intelligence agents who provided all the information to the Iraqi police. The latter informed the assistants to the head of the Catholic Church.

The assassination attempt on the Pope was planned by kamikazes, including a young woman who arrived in Mosul packed with explosives.

A young woman, a suicide bomber with explosives, was on her way to Mosul to blow herself up during the papal visit. A van was also heading there at high speed with the same mission
