British driver sets speed record in a hydrogen-powered car

64-year-old British driver Andy Green set a new speed record for hydrogen-powered cars. He accelerated the vehicle to 654 km/h. The BBC reports, as cited by UNN.

The British driver who was the first to break the sound barrier in a land vehicle has set a new speed record, this time in a hydrogen-powered vehicle

Andy Green is a 64-year-old retired Royal Air Force pilot. He achieved the new result in a car with two hydrogen internal combustion engines. This took place on the Bonneville Salt Flats in the state of Utah. The man reached a speed of 406 miles per hour, or 654 km/h. The engines' combined braking power was 1,600 horsepower. The record was determined as the average speed over two runs.

Thus, Green recorded the highest speed ever achieved by a hydrogen-powered car.

At the same time, according to the publication, Andy Green set another record in 1997. In the ThrustSSC jet-powered car, he drove across Nevada's Black Rock Desert at a speed of 763 miles per hour, or 1,228 km/h.

Green then became the first person to break the sound barrier on land. He remains the only person to have achieved this.
