Britain announces new sanctions against Belarus over human rights violations

The UK has imposed sanctions on the heads of Belarusian prisons and defense companies. It also allocated 2.5 million pounds to support human rights and civil society in Belarus.

On the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the fraudulent presidential election in Belarus, the United Kingdom announced new sanctions against Minsk. This was reported by UNN with reference to the British Foreign Office.

Details

The British sanctions list includes the heads of four Belarusian penal colonies where political prisoners and activists are illegally held, as well as three Belarusian defense and military-industrial enterprises that maintain ties with Russia.

In particular, the sanctions list now includes 

  1. Tolstenkov Denys Anatoliyovych: Commandant of Penal Colony No. 4;
  2. Andrii Palchyk: former commandant of penal colony No. 1
  3. 3. Pylyp Volodymyrovych Sturchanka: Commandant of Penal Colony 3
  4. Lazarenko Oleksii Valeriiovych: Commandant of Correctional Colony 15

All 4 individuals are or have been responsible for participating in, supporting and facilitating serious human rights violations, repression of civil society and the democratic opposition, and actions and activities that undermine democracy and the rule of law in Belarus

Also sanctioned were: 

  • StankoGomel OJSC: A Belarusian machine tool manufacturer that exports goods to Russia for use in the Russian military-industrial sector;
  • JSC "NIIVM": a Belarusian government-affiliated organization doing business in the Belarusian defense sector;
  • Ruchservomotor LLC: Belarusian manufacturer of machine tools that exports goods to Russia for use in the Russian military-industrial sector

In addition to the sanctions, the UK announced the allocation of £2.5 million "to support human rights and civil society in Belarus, including further funding for an international platform to collect evidence of human rights violations by the Lukashenko regime.

The EU Council has adopted sanctions against 28 people for human rights violations in Belarus. The restrictions apply to representatives of law enforcement agencies, the judiciary and state media.
