The drop was caused by statements made by US President-elect Donald Trump, who threatened to impose new trade tariffs on China and other countries.
Most cryptocurrencies, including altcoins, continued to decline after bitcoin. The exception was Ethereum, the second largest cryptocurrency by capitalization, which rose slightly to $3,242.17.
XRP lost 1.4% after last week's gains, triggered by the news of SEC Chairman Gary Gensler's upcoming resignation in January.
Solana, Cardano, and Polygon experienced a decline from 1.9% to 6.3%, and the Dogecoin memo token fell by 4.2%.
