An explosion has occurred at the new SaxaVord spaceport in Shetland during a rocket test by the German company Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA). The tests, which were aimed at preparing for the first vertical launch of a rocket from the UK, ended with an “anomaly” that led to the loss of a rocket stage. However, the company reported that no one was injured.
The explosion occurred during the testing of nine engines on Anstey Island on Monday. RFA said the launcher was safe, the situation was under control, and any immediate danger had been eliminated. The company is working with the spaceport and authorities to determine the cause of the failure.
RFA, based in Augsburg, Germany, emphasized that testing was an important part of its development philosophy, and the company was aware of the risks associated with this approach. A company spokesperson assured that they are committed to returning to regular operations as soon as possible.
This incident occurred three months after the first successful test at the same site, when the RFA performed an eight-second engine launch.
