2024 was the most difficult year for Ukraine's power system since the beginning of the invasion - Ministry of Energy

In 2024, Russia carried out 13 massive attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, resulting in the loss of 10 GW of capacity. Despite this, the power system remains intact thanks to a large-scale repair campaign.
This year has been the most difficult for the Ukrainian energy system since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. Russia has carried out 13 massive attacks on energy infrastructure, using new tactics, ballistic missiles and cluster munitions. This was reported by the Ministry of Energy, UNN reports.
"2024 was the most difficult year for the Ukrainian energy system since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. Russia carried out 13 massive attacks on energy infrastructure, using new tactics, ballistic missiles and cluster munitions. This led to the loss of about 10 GW of generating capacity," the statement said.
Despite the large-scale destruction, Ukrainian power engineers conducted the largest repair campaign in the country's history.
"It took place under constant shelling, and some facilities had to be restored several times. Thanks to the perseverance of power engineers, Ukrainians have electricity in their homes and the power system remains intact. We are grateful to all employees of the energy sector for their dedication and strength of spirit. The most important task - to keep the power grid intact - has been accomplished," the Ministry of Energy said.
The Ministry of Energy also listed the key results of the year:
- International support.
Donors pledged more than €1 billion to the Energy Support Fund for Ukraine. 36 countries donated humanitarian aid for the stable operation of the energy system. The IAEA supported Ukraine's statement on the threats posed by Russia and ensures monitoring of critical facilities.
- Development of distributed generation.
As of December 31, a total of 967 MW of distributed generation facilities were connected, including 835 MW in 2024. The distributed generation development strategy until 2035 has been approved and financial programs have been launched to increase energy independence of consumers. This includes 0% lending for the purchase of energy equipment, the Affordable Loans 5-7-9 program, and GreenDom. Financing of projects worth UAH 8.3 billion has begun, which will provide almost 430 MW of new capacity.
- Development of nuclear energy.
All 9 nuclear power units have been prepared for the winter period and cover 60% of electricity needs. Ukraine and the United States have announced projects to build small modular reactors. Thanks to nuclear generation, there is light even in the most difficult moments.
- Energy reform and European integration.
The National Energy and Climate Plan until 2030 was approved. Ukraine has increased its electricity import capacity from the EU to 2.1 GW and has been operating as part of the ENTSO-E European power grid for more than 1000 days.
- Energy independence. Increased volumes of domestic natural gas production.
Addendum
Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal statedthat despite dozens of Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy sector, the country has withstood and preserved the integrity of the system.
