15 km from the Chernobyl NPP: Shahed debris discovered at the site of a strike on a nuclear fuel storage building

The General Staff has labeled the strike by an enemy attack UAV on the container reception building of the Centralized Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility as nuclear terrorism. Remnants of a "Shahed" type UAV were found at the site of the extinguished fire, UNN reports.

Details

The General Staff confirmed that at 02:10 on June 7, 2026, a direct hit by an enemy attack UAV was recorded on the container reception building of the Centralized Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility of JSC "NNEGC "Energoatom" near the settlement of Buryakivka, Kyiv region. The distance to the Chernobyl NPP is about 15 km.

The specified facility is intended for the long-term safe storage of spent nuclear fuel from VVER-type reactors of Ukrainian nuclear power plants.

As a result of the strike, the building was partially damaged and a fire broke out over an area of about 40 square meters.

The fire was extinguished within an hour by the forces and means of the fire and rescue detachment and a mobile operational group.

According to available information, there are no casualties.

Remnants of a "Shahed" type UAV were found at the site of the extinguished fire. Currently, the radiation background is within normal limits; rescuers and all involved services continue to monitor the situation and perform their assigned tasks

- the report says.

Additionally

The General Staff emphasized that this latest act of nuclear terrorism is a continuation of the Russian Federation's systematic policy aimed at creating risks for nuclear energy facilities in Ukraine and throughout Europe.

During the full-scale aggression, Russian troops have repeatedly laid flight paths for cruise missiles and attack drones directly over Ukraine's nuclear facilities. Such actions create unacceptable risks of radiation accidents with consequences that could extend far beyond the borders of Ukraine

- the report says.

As noted by the General Staff, a specific example of the aggressor state's irresponsible behavior was the 2025 attack on the protective shelter of the destroyed fourth power unit of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The strike on the facility, which ensures the isolation of radioactive materials, once again demonstrated the Russian military-political leadership's complete disregard for international nuclear safety norms.

The greatest threat remains the illegal occupation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Russian occupation forces continue to use the territory and facilities of the plant as a military base, stationing personnel, weapons, military equipment, and ammunition there. In effect, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe has been turned by the Russian Federation into a tool for nuclear blackmail and cover for its military operations. The Armed Forces of Ukraine emphasize that the responsibility for all threats to nuclear and radiation safety created as a result of Russian aggression lies entirely with the Russian Federation. The international community must provide an appropriate assessment of these criminal actions and increase pressure on the aggressor state to prevent a nuclear catastrophe in the heart of Europe

- the report states.
