The President of Ukraine has appointed a new ambassador to Germany to replace Oleksiy Makeev. The new ambassador will be Yevhen Korniychuk, who currently represents Ukraine in Israel.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has changed the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany. The official reason is the regular rotation of diplomats. This became known to BILD from several sources in diplomatic circles, UNN reports.
Details
Oleksiy Makeev has been Ukraine's ambassador to Germany since October 2022. He will be succeeded by the current Ambassador of Ukraine to Israel, Yevhen Korniychuk.
The publication notes that officially, the reason for the replacement of Makeev is the regular rotation of diplomats. However, things may be different behind the scenes. Makieiev's work was systematically and publicly criticized by his predecessor, Andriy Melnyk. In an interview with Tagesspiegel, Melnyk said that Makeev should "get off his ass" and convince Germany to provide more aid to Ukraine.
Diplomatic circles say that Melnyk did not hold back his criticism behind the scenes. However, it remains unclear whether this influenced the decision to dismiss Makeev under Ukraine's new foreign minister, Andriy Sybiga.
According to reports, Makeev will stay in Berlin until February. During his tenure as ambassador, Germany has supplied Ukraine with 121 battle tanks and 140 infantry fighting vehicles, as well as many other weapons.
