During one of the largest events of his African tour, the pontiff called Angola "a beautiful but wounded country." The state experienced a 27-year civil war that lasted from 1975 to 2002.

Build together a country where old divisions will be finally overcome, where hatred and violence will disappear

- the Pope addressed the faithful.

People began to gather for the service before dawn in the Kilamba residential area, despite the heat and humid weather. Upon the pontiff's arrival, the crowd greeted him with dances and shouts.

One of the participants in the mass, Sister Cristina Matende, noted that the Pope's visit was a source of joy for people during a difficult period.

The fact that the Pope came here is a great joy. We live in a time of great difficulties

– she said.

Reuters reminds that Angola is one of the leading oil-producing countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, but a significant part of the population still lives in poverty. More than half of the country's residents are Catholics.

Earlier, the Pope also called on political leaders to work in the interests of all people, and not just corporate structures, and condemned dictators who promise prosperity but bring suffering.
