The Swedish authorities are considering introducing age restrictions for social media based on the Australian model. The reason for this was a threefold increase in the number of murder suspects among teenagers under 15.

Due to the growth of juvenile delinquency, Sweden is considering setting age restrictions for social networks based on the Australian model. This was reported by Vienna.at, according to UNN.

Details

It is noted that the minister of Justice Gunnar Strummer, after a meeting with Scandinavian colleagues, said that such a decision should prevent the use of children and teenagers by gangs to carry out murders or bombings

"The situation is very serious. We do not rule out anything," he stressed.

According to Swedish police, gangs have been actively using Instagram, Tik Tok and other platforms in recent years to recruit teenagers to commit attacks in Scandinavia.

Some of the recruited children were only 11 years old. During January-July 2024, Sweden counted 93 suspects in murders under the age of 15 — three times more than in the same period last year.

addition

Sweden currently has the highest rate of fatal shootings in Europe per capita. In Denmark, the police recorded 32 cases when Swedes were involved in violent crimes.

According to the Minister of stirrup, several companies, including Meta (the owner of Facebook), Google (a division of Alphabet) and Snap (the operator of Snapchat), have declared their readiness to do "everything possible" to solve the problem. However, if the results are unsatisfactory, the government is ready to step in.

The Swedish authorities are studying the experience of other countries to find the most appropriate restrictions for local conditions. So far, the tech giants have not commented on this situation.

recall

The Australian Senate has approved a bill banning social media for children under the age of 16. Age verification will be carried out using biometric data or state identification, without providing Passport data to platforms.
